A mobile dog groomer had her 2017 Sentra SL parked near the vacuum stalls at a car wash off Arroyo Burro Beach in Santa Barbara. She called me because her only Intelligent Key had stopped working that morning. Push button would not respond. Dash just showed "Key ID Incorrect" over and over.
She had already called the Nissan dealer. They told her she needed to tow the car in, leave it for a diagnostic appointment, and come back in about a week. She asked a friend instead. The friend told her the same thing. Then she searched around and found me.
I got there that evening. Popped the back cover off the CWTWB1U840 fob on the hood of her car. The CR2032 was so dead my multimeter barely picked up 1.2 volts. Swapped it, held the fob to the start button, and the car fired right up. That told me the fob internals and the PCF7953M chip were fine, just starved for power.
But she also needed a spare. She had been running on one key for two years. I generated a new Intelligent Key, programmed it through the OBD-II port to the BCM, and tested all five buttons on both fobs. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start. Walked the perimeter checking proximity detection at every door handle.
She loaded her grooming tubs in the back and left. The whole thing took about 25 minutes. Her car does not know or care whether that key came from a dealer bay or a car wash parking lot. The NATS5a handshake is identical either way.
