The transponder uses passive induction from the ignition coil, so it does not need the CR2032 to start the car. But the remote buttons do. When the battery gets low or the contacts lose their seat inside a cracked shell, the lock and unlock functions drop out first, sometimes long before the car stops starting. Swap the CR2032, make sure it is seated flat against both contacts, and retest. If the range is still short or the buttons are inconsistent, the board may need a fresh housing.
