Got a call from a woman over on Surfside Drive area in Port Hueneme. She had a 2005 Nissan Sentra and one working key left. Said she'd been meaning to get a spare for years and kept putting it off. Then she dropped the original in a parking lot drain at the grocery store, fished it out with a coat hanger, and it still worked, but the plastic head had cracked clean open and the transponder chip was barely sitting inside the housing.
She was holding the key together with electrical tape.
Her first call was to the Nissan dealer. They told her to bring the car in and the wait would be a few days since they had to order the key blank and schedule the CONSULT session. She didn't want to be without her car that long over what she called "a copy."
I showed up with the NSN14 blank and my programmer. Her Sentra uses the NATS5 system, which talks to the PCF7936 chip through the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. I plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer module, and ran the key registration. Cut the blade on my HPC machine right there in her driveway.
She turned the new key, engine fired, security light went off. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. She peeled the tape off the old one and handed it to me like evidence. "You can throw that away."
Spare done, way less than the dealer route, and she never left her house.
