Got a call from a guy over near the Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum area. His 2004 Sentra 1.8S wouldn't start. Cranked fine, just wouldn't catch. He'd already had a buddy try jumping it and had swapped the fuel pump relay himself. Nothing.
I asked him one question: is the little key-shaped light on your dash blinking when you turn the ignition? He went quiet for a second and said yeah.
That's NATS doing its job. The immobilizer in the steering column wasn't reading his transponder chip anymore. Happens with the PCF7936 after years of heat and wear. The chip stops responding and the ECM never gets the release signal. Engine cranks all day but fuel and spark stay locked out.
I drove out, pulled the VIN from the jamb, confirmed his key code through the NATS pin system, and cut a fresh NSN14 blank. Plugged the IM608 into the OBD-II port under the steering column, pulled the 4-digit NATS pin, and registered the new ID46 transponder. About 20 minutes, parking lot, done.
He told me the dealer quoted him a tow plus a visit that would eat most of his day. He'd already wasted half of it chasing the fuel pump theory. Once the new key turned and the engine caught on the first crank, he just sat there for a second like he didn't trust it yet.
