2006 Nissan Sentra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2006 Nissan Sentra Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out near Hueneme Beach had been nursing a dying key for about two months before he finally called me.

The plastic head was cracked, the key was bent slightly at the shoulder, and it had gotten to the point where he'd have to hold it at a specific angle to get the car to start. Some mornings it worked on the first try. Some mornings he was sitting in the parking lot for ten minutes doing the wiggle-and-pray routine.

He assumed it was an ignition problem. That was his whole theory by the time I pulled up.

I looked at the key first, not the ignition. The blade was worn and the crack in the head looked like it had been spreading for a while. That kind of physical damage to the key head can affect how well the chip inside couples with the reader ring around the ignition. It's not always a clean failure. Sometimes it's intermittent, which is exactly what he was dealing with.

Cut a new key blade to match the lock, programmed the replacement transponder key to the car through the OBD port, tested it through a full start cycle. Immediate, clean start. No hesitation. The ignition itself was fine the whole time.

He'd already gotten a quote from the dealer that assumed he'd need an ignition cylinder plus a new key plus their programming time. He didn't need any of that. The dealer comparison wasn't even the point by then. He just wanted his car back, and it took less than half an hour.
