A guy in Woodcreek had just bought a 2005 Corolla off Craigslist. Good car, fair price, one key. The seller handed him a single worn key on his way out and told him to get a spare cut somewhere cheap. He figured a hardware store would handle it.
Hardware stores can cut the blade just fine, but they cannot do anything about the transponder chip inside the key. Without the immobilizer recognizing the chip, the engine either won't start at all or cranks and dies immediately. He found that out the hard way when the hardware copy turned the ignition and did absolutely nothing useful.
He called the dealer. They quoted him a number that made him pause, then he called me.
I met him at his place in Woodcreek. His original key still worked, which made the job clean. I decoded the blade and cut a fresh one to match, then handled the transponder programming through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it. The fob, which runs a CR2032 and matches the factory part number on his existing remote, was already working fine so we left it alone.
He walked away with a proper spare that actually starts the car, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted. And now if he ever loses one, it's an add-a-key job rather than an all-keys-lost situation, which is a much faster and cheaper call.
