There is a quiet stretch of Santa Susana Knolls where the streets dead-end into the hills and the nearest Toyota dealer is a freeway drive away. Not a big deal for most people. A bigger deal when you are an older woman who stopped driving the freeway and your only key fob for your 2017 Corolla is stuck showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash every third start.
Her son had called me from out of state. She had been dealing with it for weeks: walk up to the car, press the door handle, nothing. Walk around to the passenger side, it would unlock. Or she would get in, press the start button, and the dash would throw the warning before eventually catching. She had already swapped the battery herself, which was the right instinct, but the new cell was not seating flat against the contacts.

Both door handles for touch unlock, all four buttons, start button response from the driver seat. Everything came back clean.
She did not need a new key. She needed someone to come to her. The dealer had quoted a price for a full replacement fob and programming, which would have meant her son flying in to drive her there and back. This was a fraction of that, done in the parking lot before her morning schedule started.
I handed her a card and told her son to call me if she ever needs a spare cut. That is usually where the conversation ends up anyway.
