I was already in Oxnard Shores on another call when my phone rang. A guy in a lot near the water, not going anywhere. His 2023 Corolla was sitting there showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and he couldn't get it to recognize the fob at all. He'd already tried holding the fob right against the start button, which is the move you learn from a quick search. Nothing.
When I walked up, the first thing I noticed was that the fob had clearly taken a hit. The corner of the housing was cracked, just a small fracture, but enough that the battery wasn't seating right. The CR2450 inside was also under-voltage. So he had two problems compounding each other and neither one alone would've been obvious.
I seated a fresh CR2450 correctly, confirmed the contact was making clean contact, and the fob came back immediately. We walked the car. Touch unlock on both handles, the start button reading the key at distance, every button on the fob. All of it working.
Then I checked whether the crack in the housing was going to be a recurring problem. It was. The shell was stressed enough that it would shift again and cause the same issue inside a month. I swapped the internals into a new housing on the spot.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him not to think about it.
