Got a call from a guy in the Madera Hills neighborhood in Simi Valley. He had just landed from a week-long trip, walked out to his 2015 Corolla in the cell phone lot, and the fob did nothing. The immobilizer module still had his HYQ14FBA registered, both slots occupied. No codes pointing to an antenna or smart ECU failure. Just a dead CR1632 that had let the communication time out long enough to throw a fault.
Fresh battery in, contact tabs checked for good spring tension, fault code cleared. Then the walk-around: front handles, rear handles, trunk button, lock and unlock range from 30 feet, push-button start with foot on the brake. Everything came back clean.
He drove home that afternoon. The whole thing took less time than the shuttle ride from his terminal to the economy lot, and his Corolla never left the parking space he had pulled into a week earlier. I left a spare CR1632 in his glovebox.
