I got a call from a guy in East Simi Valley, inside a gated community off the 118 corridor. His Corolla was sitting in guest parking inside the complex and would not start. The key-not-detected warning was on the dash and the fob had stopped responding to anything. He had already tried a new battery. No change.

The wrinkle was the gate. A tow truck cannot just roll in. You need a resident to escort them, and he was not about to stand at the gate waiting on a flatbed when the car was not even in his assigned spot. He called me instead.

I drove in behind another resident, walked to the car with my bag, and got to work. The fob battery was fine. The issue was that the fob had lost its pairing with the vehicle security system. With the right diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port, I re-registered the fob to the car. Cut a fresh emergency blade from decoding the lock, tested every button on the fob, confirmed the touch unlock on both handles, and made sure the start button was reading the key correctly from the driver seat and the passenger seat.

The car started on the first try and never moved an inch the whole time I was there. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on a loaner. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged, and none of the dealer options would have solved the gate problem anyway.
