Got a call from a guy in the North Ranch neighborhood of Thousand Oaks. His 1999 Viper GTS had been parked in the garage for a few months over winter, and when he went to take it out, the only key he had was worn down enough that it barely turned the ignition cylinder.
He had already called the dealer. They told him they would need the car towed in, quoted him a wait time that stretched into next week, and wanted a good chunk of money just to cut a new key and inspect the cylinder. For a car with no transponder chip. Just a metal key.
I drove out, decoded the lock with my Y157 Lishi right on his driver's door, and cut a fresh key on the blank. Clean cuts, no wear. Slid it into the ignition and it turned like new. Then I tested the door lock and the trunk release just to cover everything.
The whole job took maybe twenty minutes. He stood there watching the Lishi work and asked if the car had a chip in the key. I told him no, his Viper predates all of that. He looked relieved, like he had been bracing for a bigger bill.
He mentioned the car only comes out on weekends. One good key is all it takes, but I told him a spare living in a drawer at home is cheap insurance on a car like this.
