Out near Goleta Beach Park, a guy had his 2016 Viper parked at the lot and was planning a quick afternoon out. Except his one and only key had been cracking at the plastic head for months, and today the blade finally snapped clean off when he turned the ignition.
Blade stuck in the cylinder. Transponder head in his hand. No spare. He told me he bought the car used with a single key and kept meaning to get a second one made. Years went by.
I got there and checked the broken head first. The ID48 chip inside was still intact, which is common even when the housing is destroyed. I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data right off the broken piece. That meant I could clone to a new Y170 blank without running a full all-keys-lost procedure through the Sentry Key module on the instrument cluster.
Pulled the snapped blade fragment from the ignition cylinder with extraction tools, decoded the wafers, and cut two fresh Y170 keys. Pressed in the cloned ID48 chips, tested both in the ignition. Car started on the first turn with each one.
He just sat there for a second holding both keys like he was deciding which pocket to trust. Whole thing took about 35 minutes. He went from zero keys to two for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone. If you have broken pieces, always bring them. That chip inside saves a lot of time.
