2006 Dodge Viper
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Viper to the dealer?

Not if you call me. Dealers will tell you the vehicle needs to be in their service bay, and when all keys are lost that usually means arranging a flatbed. For a low-slung car like the Viper, loading it onto a flatbed is its own conversation. I come to the vehicle. Whether it's parked in a driveway in North Fillmore or stuck somewhere else in Fillmore, I bring everything needed and handle it on the spot.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or title. I confirm the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb sticker on your Viper to make sure everything lines up before I cut anything. Dealers require the same documentation and have turned people away for mismatched names between ID and title, or for showing up with a photo of the paperwork instead of the original.

Q: My Viper remote works fine up close but the range has gotten really short. What's going on?

Short range before a full failure is one of the most common complaints on these older remotes. A few things cause it. First suspect is always the CR2032. Even a battery that tests at a decent voltage can lose enough power output to cut range before it stops working at close distance. Swap it with a fresh name-brand cell, not a no-name discount battery. If that doesn't fix it, look at the housing.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

The remote itself can sometimes be found online using the factory FCC ID on the fob as a reference. The programming side is where it gets complicated. Some owners on forums have reported successfully using an onboard add-a-key sequence on vehicles from this era when at least one working key is still present. Others report it not working and needing professional equipment to complete the pairing.

2006 Dodge Viper Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in North Fillmore who'd been driving his 2006 Viper as a weekend car. He'd had the same key for years and never thought about a spare. Then his remote stopped responding from more than a few feet away. He figured the battery was dying, swapped the CR2032 himself, and it helped for about two weeks. Then it quit again.

He called me because the Dodge dealer had quoted him a long wait for a service appointment and told him the car would need to be present. He didn't want to trailer a Viper across town on a Saturday for a key remote.

I came to him. He was parked in his driveway, and I worked right there. The original fob turned out to have a hairline crack in the housing near the battery contact, which is a known wear point on older remotes like this one. The contact wasn't seating clean even with a fresh battery.

New remote, properly matched to the vehicle, tested through every button and confirmed at range. Done in the driveway while he stood there and watched.

He mentioned the dealer quote after I finished. The difference was real. He said he wished he'd called first.
