2004 Mazda 3 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy parked off to the side near the Simi Hills area, close enough to home that he could have walked, but the car wasn't going anywhere. His 2004 Mazda 3. He had the key in his hand, right key, right car. The blade slid into the ignition fine. But when he turned it, the engine cranked and quit. Cranked and quit again. He tried it maybe six times before he gave up and called.
That pattern tells you something before you even open the hood. The engine cranking means the mechanical cut is correct and the ignition cylinder is reading the blade. The stall tells you the immobilizer is not happy with what it saw from the transponder. Could be a failed chip, could be a key that got cloned wrong somewhere along the way, could be a second key someone had made at a shop that didn't have the right equipment.
He mentioned offhand that he'd had a spare cut at a mall kiosk a few months back. That was the key in his hand. His original was somewhere at home.
I had the right blank, cut it to match his ignition by decoding the lock, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Tested it cold. Engine started, held idle, no warning lights. Took me about 25 minutes on site in a neighborhood he knows well.
He said the dealer told him to tow it in and plan for a day or two turnaround. We were done before the tow truck would have even shown up.

“About 15 minutes after calling, he was already at my home. I had lost my original Ford key and he made and programmed a new one on the spot. Very fast, very professional.”
