A guy in Old Town Camarillo flagged me down through a contact form late on a Tuesday. His 2014 Mazda 3 was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash, and he had one fob, no spare. The car would still start, barely, if he held the fob right against the start button and pressed slowly. That's a classic sign of a weak battery or a slightly unseated cell, not a dead key system.
He'd already bought a CR2025 from a gas station and swapped it in himself. Still the same behavior. He figured he'd done something wrong, or the fob was going bad, or the car needed dealer reprogramming.
I got there and popped the fob open. His new battery was seated correctly, contacts looked fine. So I walked the car instead of the fob. Tested the driver-side door handle touch-unlock. Nothing. Passenger side worked. Start button recognized the key when held close but not from a normal pocket carry distance.
The driver door handle antenna was the weak point. Dirty sensor, a little surface oxidation on the contact area. Cleaned it up, retested, and the touch-unlock snapped back. Fob range came back with it because the car was now reading the key through the closest antenna instead of fighting for signal from across the cabin.
He had one working key, no spare, and a car that had been half-functional for two weeks. We added a second fob while I was already there. Programmed it on site with the diagnostic tool, tested all four buttons, walked both door handles, and ran the start button from his pocket like a normal person would.
The dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just for the appointment, plus the cost of the key itself and programming on top. He paid a fraction of that, didn't move the car, and was done before lunch.
