Over in the Big Sky neighborhood in Simi Valley, a guy flagged me down from his duplex driveway. His 2011 Mazda 3 smart fob had a crack running straight through the housing. The shell had split after a drop on the concrete, and two of the four buttons were barely hanging on by the rubber pad underneath.

I pulled up, read the keyless module data through the OBD port with my ACDP as a precaution, then carefully moved his existing electronics into a new aftermarket housing matched to the BBY2-67-5RY shell profile. Fresh CR2025 seated correctly, blade transferred over, buttons tested one at a time. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then push-to-start from inside, engine off, restart again cold.
He stood there watching the whole thing from his driveway. Took maybe twenty minutes.
The fob was never broken. The plastic around it was. He kept his original programmed key and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted for a full replacement he never needed.
