2016 Mazda 3 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Camarillo Springs, I got a call from a guy who had been nursing a single smart key on his 2016 Mazda 3 for almost two years. He'd bought the car used, one key in the envelope, and just kept telling himself he'd get a spare made eventually. Eventually turned into the key stopping working on a Tuesday morning before work.
It wasn't dead. It was close. The fob would start the car about half the time, and the door handles would respond maybe once out of three tries. He'd already swapped the battery, or thought he had. When I popped the fob open on his hood, there was a CR2032 in there instead of the correct CR2025. Previous owner or some shop along the way had used whatever was handy. The contact plate had a slight outward bow from the thicker cell sitting against it for who knows how long.
I straightened the contact, seated the right battery, and the fob woke right back up. But he still needed that spare, which was the original reason I was there.
I decoded the door lock mechanically, cut a fresh key blade to match, and programmed a new fob to the car through the OBD port. The whole thing took about 35 minutes in his driveway. I walked every function: both door handles, the lock button, the unlock button, and the other two buttons on the fob, plus the emergency blade in the ignition just to confirm the cut was clean.
He ended up with two working keys. The dealer had quoted him a number that made him put it off for two years. He said he wished he hadn't waited.
