The graphic designer from Camarillo Heights area called about his 2021 Mazda 3. Said the dealer wanted him to drop the car off for "at least half a day" just for a spare smart key.
I met him at his place with my MVP Pro. The 2021 Mazda 3 uses server-based security through Mazda's online system, but with the right credentials and equipment, it's a 30-minute job. His WAZSKE11D01 fob needed the PIN pulled from the BCM, then the new key registered through the keyless control module.
While the security timer counted down, he told me about waiting three days for the dealer to get the fob in stock. Then they wanted another appointment just for programming.
The trickiest part was making sure both keys worked with the door handle sensors. These Mazdas have separate antennas in each handle, and sometimes one side gets finicky. Both fobs locked and unlocked from 30 feet, started the car, and activated the panic button.
He kept testing the new key, walking farther away each time. "Same chip, same everything?" he asked. Same everything, just without the dealer markup and the wasted afternoon.
