A landscaping crew leader came to me near the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo. His 2015 Mazda 3 smart key had been acting up for weeks. Touch unlock on the driver door was hit or miss, and the fob range had shrunk to about arm's length. He'd already tried a new battery himself and figured the whole key was gone.
He wasn't wrong that something was off. But it wasn't the key itself.
When I pulled the fob apart on my work van, the battery contacts had a slight corrosion buildup, barely visible, the kind that comes from a previous battery leaking a little before it was swapped. The CR2025 he'd installed was fine. The contacts just weren't making clean contact anymore. I cleaned the terminals, reseated the battery, and tested every function: lock, unlock, and the other two buttons, plus door handle touch response on both sides.
Everything came back. Full range, both handles, all buttons.
He said the dealer had quoted him a replacement key without even looking at the fob. I get why owners assume that's the only path. But a lot of these calls aren't all-keys-lost jobs. Sometimes it's a ten-minute fix on site, and you keep the original key that's already paired to the car.
