I got a call from a guy in the Leisure Village area of Camarillo. He had a 2018 Mazda 3 and a problem that looked worse than it was.
He had dropped the fob on his driveway, face-down onto the concrete edge of his curb. The housing cracked along the seam and the buttons were barely holding together. The key would still start the car if he held it just right, but one of the button pads had started separating and the whole thing felt like it was going to fall apart in his hand.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to come in, plan on leaving the car, and that he should expect to be without it while they ordered the fob and got it in. The number they gave him made him pause.
When I got there, I opened the fob on my workbench in the van. The electronics inside were completely intact. The board was clean, the battery contacts were fine, the CR2025 still had a good charge. The only thing actually broken was the plastic shell. That's it.
I transferred his working internals into a fresh housing, seated a new CR2025 correctly, and ran through every button plus the push-to-start system to confirm everything was talking to the car. His original fob, same programming, same registration, same everything, just in a case that wasn't cracked.
He saved a serious chunk compared to what the dealer quoted for a full fob replacement. And he didn't have to leave his car anywhere.
Sometimes the damage looks scarier than the actual repair.
