1999 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does a 1999 Nissan Frontier actually use?

A standard metal key cut to the vehicle. That is it. No remote, no fob, no battery to replace. The key operates the door locks and ignition cylinder mechanically. Getting a replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. A locksmith either decodes your lock cylinder or uses the key code to cut a new one. Clean, simple, done on site.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a replacement key on a 1999 Frontier?

Longer than it needs to be. Dealers typically treat any key job as a scheduled service appointment. You call, get a quote, find a time, and if the vehicle is not drivable you arrange a tow first. The actual cutting takes minutes, but the dealer blocks out a full service window around it. With a mobile locksmith, there is no appointment queue and no tow.

Q: My 1999 Frontier key turns but the ignition feels stiff or sticky. Does that affect getting a replacement cut?

It can, and it is worth mentioning when you call. A worn or sticky ignition cylinder means the tumblers inside may not be reading a key's cut the way they should. If a new key is copied from a worn original, it can inherit those tolerances and feel just as stiff. The better approach is to decode the lock cylinder directly and cut to the original factory spec.

Q: I have one working key left for my 1999 Frontier. Should I get a spare made now or wait until it fails?

Get the spare now. A working key is the easiest time to make a copy because you have a reference. Once that last key is lost or broken, a locksmith has to decode the lock or pull a code from the VIN, which adds steps. It is still doable, but it costs more and takes longer than a simple duplication while the original is in hand. One key is a bad place to be with any vehicle.

1999 Nissan Frontier Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman on the Westside runs a home daycare out of her bungalow. Her 1999 Frontier was her errand truck, school-run vehicle, and supply hauler all in one. The key shell had cracked near the blade, and the plastic had split badly enough that she was wrapping it in electrical tape to keep it together.

She had already called the dealer. They told her the only path was a new key cut to her vehicle, gave her a number that made her pause, and didn't mention that the job could be handled anywhere else.

I came to her that evening. The blade was worn but still readable, and I decoded the lock to get the original cut spec rather than copying what was left of the worn original. Cut a new key, verified it in the door and the ignition, then cut a second one on the spot so she'd have a backup. She had never had a spare.

The dealer quote was a distant memory by the time I packed up. She saved a good chunk, and she walked away with two working keys instead of one.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer to get a replacement key for a 1999 Frontier?▼

No. The 1999 Frontier uses a mechanical key, so any qualified locksmith with the right cutting equipment can handle it on the spot. The dealer route means calling for an appointment, potentially towing the vehicle if you have no working key, and paying dealer labor rates for a job that does not require dealer tools. We come to you in the Westside area of Santa Barbara and get it done in one visit, no appointment scheduling or tow truck needed.
