2020 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The fob your 2020 Frontier came with is not a passive piece of metal. It communicates electronically with the vehicle, and the truck won't start unless that communication checks out. A hardware store kiosk cuts metal shapes. It has no way to register a new key with your vehicle's immobilizer, which is what actually has to happen before the truck will run. The three-button fob also handles your lock and unlock functions.

Q: What equipment do you use to program Nissan smart keys?

Professional-grade diagnostic tools designed for automotive key programming. For a 2020 Frontier, the job runs through the OBD port and requires equipment that can communicate with the vehicle's security system to register the new fob and, if needed, erase lost or stolen keys from memory. Some locksmiths pass on newer Nissan work because the software investment is significant. We don't.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need a new one from you?

Bring it. If the fob you bought is the correct unit for a 2020 Frontier, we can attempt to program it. That said, this is where online purchases get complicated. Counterfeit and mislabeled fobs are common on marketplace sites, and some units are defective out of the box in ways that only show up during programming. If the fob you have is legitimate and in working condition, programming it is the same job regardless of where the part came from.

Q: My 2020 Frontier key fob works fine to start the truck but the lock and unlock buttons have gotten weak. Is the key going bad?

Most likely it's the battery dropping off. On this fob, the start function and the remote buttons don't all demand the same signal strength. The buttons that operate the doors over a longer range tend to show range loss before the start function goes. Swap the CR2032 first. If the range comes back, that was it.

2020 Nissan Frontier Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Wooley Road near the South Bank waterfront when she texted me. Pilates studio between classes, maybe 25 minutes before her next group. She had the VIN already typed out in the message, which is the kind of thing that makes a job go smooth.

The 2020 Frontier is a three-button smart key setup. She needed a spare added to the truck, and she still had the original fob working, so this was an add-a-key rather than a start-from-scratch situation. I had the correct blank already prepped during the drive over because she gave me the year and model upfront.

I pulled up, she handed me both keys, and I got to work at the hood. Cut the blade to her vehicle, pulled the fob apart to verify the battery was seated right in the new one, and ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port to pair the new key to the truck. Walk the doors, test the start button, run every button on both fobs to confirm the original didn't get knocked out of memory during the process. It didn't.

She was back inside with four minutes to spare before her class. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get a service appointment. That part barely surprised me anymore.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for. If they won't give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that's a problem. If the opening quote is suspiciously low and they say they'll sort out the real price on arrival, walk away. That's a bait-and-switch, and it happens to Nissan owners regularly based on what you'll find in truck forums and Reddit threads about mobile locksmith scams. Look them up.
