2004 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Frontier to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. Dealers will often tell you that you need the vehicle in their bay, and for newer Nissans with immobilizer programming that is partly true. But the 2004 Frontier is a mechanical key. There is no programming involved. A locksmith with the right decoder and cutting equipment can make a working key at the truck wherever it sits. Towing adds cost before anyone even touches the key. Skip it.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle matches before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, but done on the spot in your parking lot instead of a service counter. The process is quick and does not require the vehicle to be running or accessible before we start.

Q: My key turns hard and sometimes does not come out of the ignition smoothly. Is the key worn or is the cylinder going bad?

Both are possible, and after 20 years they usually go together. On a Frontier from this era, the ignition cylinder wafers wear gradually, and a key that has been used daily since new wears right along with them. What happens is the key and cylinder sort of conform to each other over time. A fresh-cut key from a code might actually feel stiffer than the worn original because it is cutting into wafers that have settled into a different position.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key if all I have is the VIN?

Yes, with ownership verification. The VIN on a 2004 Frontier can be used to look up the key code through the right channels, but a locksmith still needs to confirm you own the vehicle before pulling that information. Photo ID plus registration or title covers it. Once ownership is confirmed, the key code can be retrieved and a key cut from it.

2004 Nissan Frontier Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a student parking area near Moorpark College. She had a 2004 Frontier, the compact version, and her only key had snapped at the bow. The blade was still in the ignition and the broken half was in her hand. She had already called a tow company before she called me.

I told her to hold off on the tow.

When I got there, the blade fragment was sitting just shallow enough in the cylinder that I could work it out without pulling the column. Once it was clear, I decoded the door lock to get the bitting and cut a replacement key on site. The whole thing took less than 30 minutes from the time I pulled up.

She had been ready to pay for a tow on top of whatever the dealer would charge. That math gets ugly fast. Came out to a fraction of what she was bracing for, no tow, no waiting in a dealer bay.

The truck started on the first try. She sat there for a second like she was waiting for something else to go wrong. Nothing did.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call me and I will come directly to wherever you and your Frontier are in Moorpark, including the Moorpark College Area. I carry the blanks and the cutting equipment to handle this on site. You do not need a tow, you do not need a ride to a dealer, and you do not need to leave the truck somewhere overnight.
