2017 Nissan Frontier
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2017 Nissan Frontier actually use?

A metal key cut to your specific truck. No fob. No remote buttons. No battery to swap out. The key blade is what does all the work: it turns the ignition cylinder and operates the door locks mechanically. If you're locked out or need a copy made, the job is decoding the cut from the lock and cutting a new key to match. That's it. No pairing, no programming appointment, no waiting on a parts order for a fob.

Q: Why does the dealer quote so much time for a key that seems simple?

Dealership workflow adds time that has nothing to do with your key. A service writer has to open a repair order. A tech has to be available. The vehicle may sit in a queue before anyone touches it. The actual cutting of a mechanical key is fast, but you're paying for the whole appointment structure around it. Mobile changes that.

Q: My 2017 Frontier key turns hard and sometimes doesn't want to come out. Do I need a new key or is it the cylinder?

Both are worth looking at, and they're related. A worn key changes shape gradually. The cuts get rounded down from friction and stop engaging the wafers cleanly. That's what causes the stiff turn and the stuck-in-the-cylinder feeling. Sometimes a freshly cut key from a good reference solves it immediately. If the cylinder itself is worn, the new key helps but the cylinder may still need attention.

Q: Can I get a copy made at a hardware store instead of calling a locksmith?

You can try. The catch is copy quality. Hardware store machines duplicate what's already there, including any wear on the original. If your existing key is even slightly worn down, the copy picks up those same rounded cuts and may work inconsistently or not at all. A locksmith decodes the lock directly and cuts to the correct specification, not just to the worn key in your hand. For a truck you depend on, that difference matters.

2017 Nissan Frontier Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Nyeland Acres called me on a Tuesday morning. He went to his 2017 Frontier and realized he was down to no working key.

Not a fob issue, not a dead battery in some remote. Just a worn, barely-turning metal key he'd been fighting with for months, and now it finally gave out on him. He had dialysis three times a week and the clinic was the one place he couldn't afford to miss.

Getting to a dealer wasn't realistic. Not a same-day thing, not without a ride, not without sitting in a waiting room for hours hoping someone would fit him in. He found me and asked if I could come to him.

I drove out to the clinic that morning. Decoded the lock to get the correct cut, ran it on my cutter, and handed him a fresh key that turned clean on the first try. I cut him a spare while I was there so he'd have a backup.

He didn't miss his appointment. Didn't need a ride. Didn't spend the morning on hold with a service department. The dealer comparison came up when he mentioned what they'd quoted him just to look at it. I kept that part short. He already knew.

Nissan Frontier Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Nissan dealer take for a key replacement on a 2017 Frontier?▼

For a straight mechanical key on this truck, the actual cutting takes minutes. The dealer delay isn't the work itself. It's the service writer, the queue, the repair order, waiting for a tech to free up. Owners report blocking out one to two hours for what is genuinely a short job. A mobile locksmith handles it on site, at your location, without any of that overhead.
