The 2016 Frontier uses a remote-head key, meaning the fob and the ignition key are one unit. The battery is a CR1620, which is thinner than the more common CR2032. A lot of owners swap in the wrong size, it seats loosely, and they think the fob is dead when it's just rattling against a contact. When you're getting short range or the lock and unlock buttons are acting lazy but the key still cranks, the CR1620 is the first suspect. The other thing worth knowing: this is a turn-key ignition, not push-button. So the immobilizer reads the transponder chip every time the key turns. If the key programs fine but the truck starts then immediately dies, that's a transponder issue, not a remote issue. The two functions live in the same physical key but they behave independently. One more thing for the locksmith side: on these Frontiers, when you add a key, all keys that need to work have to be present in that same programming session. Start a new session with just one key and the other key stops working. Bring every key you want functional to the appointment.
