Got a call from a guy near Hummingbird Trailhead in Simi Valley on a Saturday evening. He had a 1998 Forester, one key to his name, and that key had just snapped off in the driver door lock. Half the blade was still jammed in the cylinder.
He had already called the Subaru dealer. They told him to tow it in, they could look at it Monday, and the quote included a new lock cylinder because they assumed the broken piece ruined it. Multi-day wait, tow bill, the whole production.
I drove out that same evening. First thing I did was extract the broken blade tip from the lock cylinder with a small hook tool. Took about two minutes. The wafers inside looked fine, no damage. Then I decoded the lock by reading the wafer depths directly, cut a fresh SUB3 blank on my Condor machine right in the van, and tested it in the door, the ignition, and the trunk.
No programming step on this one. The 1998 Forester is pre-immobilizer, so a correctly cut mechanical key is all it takes. Whole job was maybe 20 minutes from the time I parked.
He kept staring at the extracted blade piece like he expected worse news. Nope. Clean cut key, working locks, no cylinder replacement needed. Done for a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and he still had his Saturday night.
