A graphic novelist in the Channel Islands neighborhood of Oxnard called me because a tow truck couldn't make it up his street. Steep one-lane road, no turnout, cars lining both sides. His 2010 Forester was sitting up there with a key that had stopped turning in the ignition.

His old key was physically worn down on the DAT17 blade, enough that the wafers inside the ignition weren't catching anymore. The transponder chip, a 4D-62, was still alive. I pulled data from the existing key using my VVDI2, cloned the transponder onto a fresh SR9-PT blank, and cut a new blade right there from the code I decoded off the lock.
Tested it in the ignition. Turned smooth. Engine fired. The immobilizer accepted the chip without a hiccup.
He stood there watching the whole thing happen on a hillside and just said, "That's it?" That's it. His car never moved until he drove it. The whole job took less time than the phone call he had with the dealer trying to schedule an appointment.
