Over in the Windsor North neighborhood in Oxnard, a woman's 2013 Forester was sitting in a Costco parking lot in July with a full grocery haul baking in the cargo area. She hit the lock button walking out of the store and it worked. Came back twenty minutes later, hit unlock, and nothing. Dead. The key wouldn't turn off the alarm either, so when she got the door open with the blade, the horn started going.
She called the dealer. Earliest appointment was the next afternoon. Frozen stuff does not survive until tomorrow.
I was about twenty minutes out. Got the door situation handled first, killed the alarm, then plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. Her key is the standard 2013 Forester remote-head type, Subaru part number 57497AG35A housing with the 4D62 transponder chip. The remote battery was completely dead, which explained the buttons, but the transponder had also lost its handshake with the immobilizer after a jump start she'd had the week before. That jump start detail matters on these because the body integrated module can drop stored key data if power gets interrupted hard enough.
New CR1620 in the remote head, reprogram the 4D62 through OBD, test lock, unlock, trunk, panic, engine start, engine restart. All good. From her call to engine running was about 42 minutes. The groceries made it.
