2024 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why does my 2024 Forester need it programmed?

A smart key is more than a remote. The fob your 2024 Forester uses communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system to verify it's an authorized key before the engine will start. It also handles proximity detection, so the car recognizes you're nearby and allows door handle touch unlock without pressing a button. The 4-button fob handles lock, unlock, and the other functions built into those remaining buttons.

Q: What equipment do you actually use to program a 2024 Subaru smart key?

For the 2024 Forester I use a professional immobilizer programmer with current Subaru software, updated to support the revised security protocol that came in on the newer model years. The smart key registration process runs through the diagnostic port and communicates directly with the body control module and the smart key control unit. For all-keys-lost situations, the job involves a timed reset sequence built into the system, so it takes longer than a simple add-a-key.

Q: My Forester starts fine but the door handles stopped detecting me. Is that the fob or something else?

If the start button still sees the fob and the car runs normally, the fob itself is probably not the issue. Proximity touch unlock and the start function use different signal paths, so they can fail independently. Start with the CR2032. A battery that's low but not dead will often drop proximity range before it affects the start function, sometimes by several feet. Swap it, make sure it seats flat against both contacts, and retest both door handles.

Q: I have one working key for my 2024 Forester. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Make the spare now. One working key is the worst position to be in on a 2024 Subaru smart key system, because if that fob fails or gets lost, you're in an all-keys-lost situation, which takes more time and costs more than a straightforward add-a-key while a working fob is still present. Adding a second key while the original is in hand is a faster job. The system can verify the existing key, which simplifies the registration process.

2024 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In La Colonia, a travel nurse on a 13-week contract at a local hospital called me on a Monday morning.

She was parked in her apartment garage and her 2024 Forester was giving her a key-not-detected warning every time she walked up to the door handle. The car would still start if she held the fob directly against the start button, which told me the fob was alive but the proximity side was struggling.

She had already called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest they could see her. She was working night shifts and didn't own the luxury of three days without her car in Oxnard.

I pulled into the garage that afternoon. First thing I did was open the fob and check the CR2032. It looked fine visually but was reading low on the meter. Swapped it, reseated the contacts, and walked the door handles. Touch unlock came back on the driver side. Problem mostly solved, but not entirely. The fob range was still shorter than it should be, and when I ran the full system check through my programmer, I could see the fob ID registration was slightly off, consistent with what I've seen on a handful of these post-2022 Subaru smart key systems after a battery dies completely.

I ran the smart key sequence, confirmed the fob paired correctly to the immobilizer, and tested every button and both door handles twice.

She drove herself to work Tuesday morning. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made her wince when I told her what they quoted. She saved a good chunk coming this way, and she didn't lose a single shift.

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Recent reviews with real text, a firm phone quote, and a BSIS license number. Scam operations cycle through dozens of business names that all route to the same call center, so read the review text, not the star rating. A real locksmith asks your year, model, push-to-start or turn key, and how many working keys you still have. Anyone who does all cars for $29 without a single question, hang up. In California, ask for the license first.
