2008 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does programming take once you are at my car?

For the 2008 Forester with a working key in hand, cutting a spare and programming the transponder typically runs 20 to 30 minutes on site, start to finish. All-keys-lost is longer. The immobilizer reset has a mandatory wait period built in, usually around 15 minutes, before the system accepts new key registration. After that wait, programming the replacement keys is quick. Total time all-keys-lost is generally under an hour from when I pull up.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a wide margin. Dealers often need to order blanks, schedule around their service bay, and on all-keys-lost jobs some have sent security components off-site entirely, adding weeks to a job that should take less than an hour. I carry blanks for the 2008 Forester on the van. One visit, same day, done in the parking lot of whatever Historic District street you happen to be on.

Q: My 2008 Forester starts fine sometimes and cranks but won't fire up other times. Could it be the key?

Yes, and it is a more common complaint on these than people expect. The transponder chip sits inside the plastic key head, and on a key that has been on a heavy keychain for years, the housing can develop hairline cracks. When the chip shifts even slightly inside the housing, it can fall outside the read range of the antenna ring in the column. Sometimes it reads, sometimes it does not.

Q: I bought a key blank online. Can I bring it to you to cut and program?

Usually, yes. Bring it along. The main thing I check is whether the blank is the correct profile for the 2008 Forester and whether the chip inside is the right type for this vehicle's immobilizer. Not every blank sold online carries the correct chip, and a wrong chip will not register no matter how clean the cut is. If the blank checks out, I can cut it to your lock and program it on site.

2008 Subaru Forester Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy called me from the VA clinic parking lot off Vineyard Ave, right in the Oxnard Historic District. He was in a wheelchair, his wife was out of town, and his only key had snapped. The blade was still in his pocket but the plastic head with the chip was stuck in the door lock cylinder. He'd tried to muscle it out with his fingernails and made it worse.

I got there and spent a few minutes extracting the broken head from the cylinder with a broken key extractor. The cylinder was fine. The chip housing in the broken head was intact, which was good news.

I decoded the lock, cut two new keys from blank stock I carry on the van, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. One key is the daily driver, one goes in his center console as the spare he never had. The whole job was done without him leaving his car. He didn't have to ask his wife to cut her trip short. Didn't have to wait for a flatbed or figure out how to get into a dealer service bay in a chair.

He mentioned afterward that the dealer had told him they'd need to order a part and schedule him a week out. I was there and done the same morning he called.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Subaru key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Subaru dealer service departments typically close Friday afternoon and run limited Saturday hours. Sunday is almost always dark. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening anywhere in or around the Oxnard Historic District, the dealer cannot help you until Monday at the earliest, and that assumes they have a blank in stock and an open slot.
