2020 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman called me from the Costco parking lot off Ventura Road in Oxnard, July, midday. She had a full cart of groceries already loaded into the back of her 2020 Forester and the fob had gone completely dark. No door response, no lock, nothing. She was standing in the sun watching frozen food lose the battle.
The dealer told her next day, earliest.
I was in Marina West when she called. I got there in about 20 minutes.
First thing: battery was reading low. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, seated it clean. Tested the door handles, tested the start button. The fob was transmitting but the car wasn't waking up to it. That pointed past the battery.
Connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port and pulled into the immobilizer module. The key ID was still registered, but the system had flagged an internal communication fault, the kind that sometimes follows a jump start when voltage spikes run through the bus. The fob itself was fine. The enrollment just needed to be confirmed and the fault cleared.
Re-registered the key through the tool, cleared the fault, walked every button and both door handles. Everything came back clean.
She had the car running in under 45 minutes from the time she called. Groceries made it home. She mentioned what the dealer had quoted her for a new fob plus programming and an appointment the next morning, and it was not a small number. What she paid me was a fraction of that, and she didn't have to leave her car overnight in a parking lot.
