July in Oxnard, near the Transit Center, and a woman's Costco haul was slowly dying in the back of her 2020 Forester. Frozen stuff, dairy, the whole run. Her fob just quit in the parking lot. Press the lock button, nothing. Press unlock, nothing. Car sealed up with all of it baking.

I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port under the dash. Her HYQ14AHK had lost transponder sync after a jump start the week before. The immobilizer module, what Subaru calls the BIU on the fifth-gen platform, had flagged the key ID but wasn't handshaking cleanly. Fresh CR2032, re-registered the fob through the body integrated unit, ran the full cycle: lock, unlock, trunk release, panic, push-button start from both front seats, and walk-away lock.
From her phone call to engine running was 42 minutes. The groceries made it. She said something about the ice cream still being firm and I told her that was the real diagnostic.
Dealer would have been next-day and way more money. She drove home instead.
