Got called to the Woolworths Building downtown in Oxnard for a 2021 Forester with a dead smart key. Owner tried the CR2032 swap already.
The HYQ14AHK wouldn't do anything. No lights when pressing buttons, car showed "No Key Detected" on the dash. She'd been using the emergency blade to manually lock and unlock for three days, holding the dead fob against the start button to get it running.
I opened the fob on her hood. The battery terminals had that white-green corrosion you see when moisture gets in. Someone had probably changed the battery with wet hands or in the rain. Cleaned the contacts with DeoxIT, seated a fresh Panasonic CR2032, and watched the LED come back to life.
But the car still wouldn't see it from more than six inches away. That's when I remembered the receiver sensitivity issue on these Gen4 systems. Did a quick module scan and found pending code U0284-00 for lost communication with the keyless module. The fob was transmitting fine, but the car's receiver was barely picking it up.
Reset the module, cleared codes, and suddenly she could unlock from 30 feet away again. The whole dance took maybe 20 minutes. Dealer would have sold her a new fob first, then maybe diagnosed the receiver issue after that didn't work.
