2012 Subaru Forester Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
An organic produce vendor at the farmers market lot off Channel Islands Boulevard in the La Colonia neighborhood was convinced her 2012 Subaru Forester needed to go to the dealer. She'd been told that by a friend, by the dealer's website, and by an old forum post. All of them were either wrong or outdated.
I met her at the lot that evening. Her Forester sat on the same packed dirt she parks on every week.
The car runs Subaru's immobilizer with a 4D62 transponder chip. There's an antenna coil wrapped around the ignition cylinder that reads the chip every time you turn the key. Programming means telling that immobilizer to accept one more chip code. I do it through the OBD port with a cable and a laptop.
I used my VVDI Key Tool to generate a new 4D62 chip, cut the blade to match her existing key, and seated it in a fresh SUB80 shell. Plugged in, ran the add-key procedure, and the immobilizer accepted it on the first pass. Then I tested the three remote buttons: lock, unlock, panic. All responding clean.
She watched the whole thing from behind her table of heirloom tomatoes. When the engine turned over, she just nodded, like she'd been waiting for someone to prove the forum wrong.
The car does not care whether the key was programmed in a dealer bay or a farmers market lot. She saved a good chunk and never left her spot.
