2012 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key, and why does my 2012 Forester need one?

The key looks like a regular metal key, but there's a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, a coil built into the ignition cylinder reads that chip. If the code matches what the immobilizer has on file, the engine starts. If it doesn't match, or if the chip is missing entirely, the car cranks but won't fire.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long on Subaru key replacements?

Three bottlenecks, mostly. First, key blanks are often ordered by VIN rather than kept in general stock. If your specific blank isn't sitting on their shelf, the part has to come in before anything else happens. Second, programming through dealer software involves an ownership verification workflow, so there's administrative back-and-forth that adds time even after the blank arrives.

Q: I have a spare key that was cut correctly but my Forester won't start with it. What's wrong?

Almost certainly an unprogrammed chip. This comes up constantly with 2012 Foresters. Someone gets a key cut at a hardware store or orders a blank online, it fits the cylinder, turns smoothly, and the car still won't start. The blade profile is correct. The chip just hasn't been registered. A correctly cut key with an unregistered transponder will crank the engine and do nothing else.

Q: Can I add a second key for my 2012 Forester myself, or do I need a technician?

You need someone with the right equipment. The 2012 Forester doesn't have an owner-accessible onboard relearn sequence for transponder keys the way some older domestic vehicles do. Registration goes through the OBD port using a programmer that can read the immobilizer and write a new chip ID to it. If you already have one working key, adding a second is an add-a-key job and tends to go faster than an all-keys-lost situation.

2012 Subaru Forester Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

An organic produce vendor working the farmers market lot in Oxnard called me about her 2012 Forester. She had one working key left and was starting to get nervous about it. A friend told her to go to the dealer. The dealer's own website said the same thing, and an old forum post she dug up backed them up. All of that was either wrong or just outdated.

I met her at the market that evening, right there in the lot. The 2012 Forester takes a standard transponder key, metal blade, chip in the head, no fob involved. I cut a new key to her vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to her immobilizer through the OBD port. The whole job happened on site while she was still packing up her stand.

The car started on the first turn. She had a spare in her hand before she finished loading the last box into the back.

She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and she didn't lose a day waiting for an appointment or a parts order. The car has no idea where the key was programmed.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does it take to get a replacement key for a 2012 Forester at the dealer?▼

It depends on whether the dealer has the right blank in stock. Best case, same-day, maybe 30 to 45 minutes once you're in the chair. But a lot of dealers order transponder blanks by VIN, and if yours isn't on the shelf, you're looking at a parts wait before they'll even schedule the programming appointment. I've heard from Forester owners in this area who waited several days just for the blank to arrive.
