A guy in La Colonia flagged me down through a text at around 7 in the morning. He said his 2014 Forester would not recognize the fob at all. Push-button start was dead, the door handle touch unlock was not responding, and the dash was telling him the key was not detected. He had already swapped the CR1632 himself the night before, which I respected. He was not guessing blind.
When I got there he handed me the fob and I opened it on the hood of my van. The battery he put in was the right size, but the positive contact inside the housing had a slight backward bow to it, just enough that the new cell was not making a solid connection. Classic pry damage from a previous owner who had forced it open with a flathead instead of the correct method.
I straightened the contact, reseated the CR1632, and closed it back up. Then I ran through everything: touch unlock on both front handles, lock button, unlock button, and the push-button start with the fob inside the cabin and then outside near the door. Every function came back clean.
He stood there for a second and then said he had already called the dealer the night before and they wanted him to bring it in, leave it for a day or two, and talk about a replacement fob.
He did not need a new fob. He needed the right small repair, done in a parking lot in La Colonia, in about fifteen minutes.
