2005 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

For a 2005 Forester where you have at least one working key and just need a spare, figure 20 to 30 minutes total from the time I pull up. The cutting is fast, the OBD connection and programming cycle is fast, and I test both keys before I leave. All-keys-lost is a different situation. The immobilizer on these Subarus requires a security wait period after the reset before it will accept new transponder registration.

Q: Can you get this done faster than going to the dealer?

Yes, by a wide margin. The dealer has to order blanks if they don't stock them, schedule you into a service bay, and in all-keys-lost situations some dealers send the immobilizer module out rather than handle the reset in-house, which can add days or longer. I carry blanks for the 2005 Forester on every call. One visit, same day, done in the parking lot where your car already sits in Hollywood by the Sea or wherever it's stranded.

Q: My 2005 Forester cranks but won't start, or starts for a second and immediately stalls. Could it be the key?

That crank-and-die pattern is the classic sign the immobilizer didn't recognize the transponder. On a 2005 Forester, the system reads the chip in the key head through a coil around the ignition. If the chip is unprogrammed, damaged, or has shifted inside a cracked key head, the car fires briefly on the mechanical signal from the starter and then cuts fuel because the security check failed.

Q: I bought a key blank online. Can you just program it, or is there something I need to know first?

Bring it and I'll take a look, but there's a catch worth knowing. Not every blank sold online for a 2005 Forester actually carries the right transponder chip for this car's immobilizer. Some listings look correct by key profile but the chip inside isn't compatible. If the chip type is wrong, programming won't take no matter what equipment is used. If the blank is correct, I can cut it to your vehicle and program it on site.

2005 Subaru Forester Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman who runs a produce stand at the farmers market lot in Oxnard. She had a 2005 Forester and one key left. That key was starting to act up, crank-and-die style, intermittent enough that she wasn't sure whether to blame the car or the key. She needed a spare made before the original gave out completely.

A friend told her to go to the dealer. The dealer's service line told her they'd need to order the blank and schedule her out. She found me before she made that appointment.

I met her at the market that evening while she was still breaking down her stand. The job on a 2005 Forester is a known process. I cut a new key blade to match her existing key, programmed the transponder chip to her car's immobilizer through the OBD port, and verified it cold-started cleanly before I packed up. The original key got tested too. Turns out the chip inside the cracked head was fine, just needed to be confirmed.

She left with two working keys. The dealer was going to take longer and cost her a lot more. The car doesn't know where the work got done.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Subaru key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Subaru dealer service departments run Monday through Friday with limited Saturday hours at best, and Sunday is generally not happening. If you lose your only key on a Friday night in Hollywood by the Sea and the car is sitting in a beach lot, the dealer cannot touch it until Monday at the earliest, assuming they have the blank in stock and an open slot.
