2001 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in the Mar Vista area of Oxnard?

Usually within 30 minutes, depending on where exactly you are and what traffic looks like. When you call, I confirm what you need for the 2001 Forester, grab the right blanks and remotes, and head straight to you. No stops, no dispatch delay. Dealers in the area have told Forester owners that fobs need to be ordered by VIN before the programming appointment can even be scheduled.

Q: Can I get a replacement key or remote made today?

Yes. I keep Subaru remotes and key blanks on the van, so there's no waiting on a shipment or booking out a week. You call, I come to you in Oxnard, and you leave with a working key and remote that day. Subaru owners who've gone the dealer route with older Foresters consistently report that the fob has to be ordered first, sometimes with a few days of lead time, and then a second visit to get it programmed.

Q: My 2001 Forester remote suddenly stopped working after I changed the battery. Did I break something?

Probably not broken, just out of sync. The fob on this generation uses a rolling code. Every button press advances the code counter, so if the battery died while the buttons were being pressed in a pocket or a bag, the fob's counter can get ahead of where the car expects it to be. Popping the battery out and back in also resets the fob in a way that can cause the same thing.

Q: I bought a used fob online for my 2001 Forester. Can you just program it to my car?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The factory FCC ID on the fob has to match what the car expects. If the fob you bought is the correct one for a 2001 Forester, I can pair it. If it's from a different year or a different Subaru model that happens to look similar, it won't pair no matter what tools you throw at it.

2001 Subaru Forester Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy called me from the VA clinic parking lot in Oxnard, over on the Mar Vista side of town. He was a disabled veteran, used a wheelchair, and his wife was out of town.

His 2001 Forester remote had stopped working entirely, and with the way the lot is laid out, even getting in and out of the car without the remote unlocking the doors was a whole ordeal for him.

Getting to a dealer wasn't just inconvenient. It genuinely wasn't something he could do alone that day.

I came to him. The key itself was fine, he could still drive, but the fob had gone completely dark. Tried a fresh CR2025 first, right there on the hood. Nothing. Went through the resync procedure. Still nothing. The fob had given up.

I had the right replacement remote with me. Got it paired and verified all four buttons were responding to the car. Locked, unlocked, walked the whole thing. Handed it back to him and he just did a couple test locks from the driver's seat while I watched.

He didn't have to reschedule anything, didn't have to wait for a part to ship, and didn't have to find a way to get across town. That part matters more on some calls than others.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2001 Subaru Forester key replacement take?▼

Depends on what you need. If the remote just needs to be resynced or a fresh fob paired, that's a pretty short visit once I'm on site. The 2001 Forester uses a rolling-code fob on a separate system from the ignition key, so pairing a replacement remote doesn't involve a long immobilizer countdown the way some all-keys-lost jobs do on other vehicles. If you've lost the ignition key itself and need a new one cut and programmed, that takes longer.
