A bartender called me around 3:30 in the afternoon from a brewery taproom lot in the Fremont North neighborhood of Oxnard. His shift started at 4:00. His 2016 Forester wouldn't respond to the push-to-start button, and the dash was throwing "KEY WARNING" at him. The bar manager was already texting.
He had tried holding the fob against the steering column, which is actually the right emergency move on these. Nothing. The CR2032 was so dead it couldn't even trigger the backup detection coil around the start button ring.
I was there in about 20 minutes. Used my DAT17 Lishi to get into the car since the proximity unlock on the door handles was obviously out too. Popped the HYQ14AHC fob open on the hood, swapped in a fresh CR2032, and connected through the OBD port to clear the immobilizer fault that had stored in the body integrated unit. On the 2016 Forester, that module sits behind the driver's side lower dash panel and it holds onto fault codes even after the battery fix.
Tested every function. Proximity lock and unlock on both front handles, all four buttons on the fob, push-to-start from cold. Everything responded like it should.
He clocked in five minutes late. His manager got over it. A dealer visit would have meant a tow, a wait for a service bay, and a whole missed shift, all for what turned out to be a battery and a code clear.
