Out in Hollywood by the Sea, off the water where the salt air does everything a slow kind of damage, I got a call from a guy who had already had a bad day before I arrived.
He was at an alignment shop on the Oxnard side, waiting on his 2015 Forester, when he realized he had only one smart key and it was acting up. He called a locksmith who showed up, started the programming sequence, and then the car battery - already low from sitting between diagnostic cycles at the shop - dropped voltage mid-handshake. The immobilizer module went into a fault state. The other locksmith packed up and told him to call the dealer.
The alignment shop called me instead.
When I got there, the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning even with the original fob present and working. That is the tell. It was not the fob. The module had latched a fault during the failed programming attempt and would not negotiate with anything until it was cleared cleanly.
I put a jump pack on the battery to hold voltage stable - that step matters more than most people expect - then used my diagnostic equipment to clear the fault codes before touching anything related to the key system. Once the module was back in a clean state, I ran the programming sequence for the new fob from the top. It learned on the first attempt.
The emergency insert blade got cut to match. Walked every button. Checked the door handle proximity response on both sides. Everything behaved.
About an hour and a half total. He had already been quoted a multi-day dealer turnaround plus a flatbed tow because the car would not start. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he drove out of the alignment shop the same afternoon.
