Over in the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard, a guy at an alignment shop had a 2015 Forester that another locksmith had already walked away from.
Here is what happened. The first tech started an all-keys-lost smart key job and the car battery sagged mid-programming. Power dropped during the security handshake between the fob and the Body Integrated Unit, which is the BIU module Subaru uses to manage immobilizer and keyless access on these fourth-gen Foresters. The BIU locked into a fault state. The other locksmith packed up. The shop called me.
I brought my jump pack and clamped it on before touching anything else. Stable 12.6 volts the whole time, no dips. Then I connected my IM608 through OBD, cleared the stored fault codes in the BIU, and ran a clean all-keys-lost procedure from scratch. His smart key, FCC ID HYQ14ACX, is the 4-button proximity fob with lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. The BIU accepted the reset once the fault memory was wiped, and the new fob registered on the first pass.
About an hour and a half total. He had been quoted a flatbed tow to the dealer and a multi-day wait on top of the programming fee. My visit was a fraction of what that route would have cost, and his Forester drove out of the shop the same afternoon.
