2004 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Oxnard?

Most calls in and around La Colonia, I'm there within thirty minutes. When you call, I confirm the year and model, pull the right blanks and equipment for your specific Forester, and head straight to you. No dispatch center, no relay. Dealer comparison is almost an afterthought here -- Subaru dealers on these older fobs sometimes have to locate a compatible remote, and owners on forums report multi-day waits before the part even arrives for programming.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. I carry blanks and programming equipment for this generation Forester on every call. No ordering a part, no scheduling a return appointment, no shipping delay while the fob travels to the dealer by VIN request. Subaru owners on forums who've gone the dealer route on these older models consistently report having to wait for the part before any programming happens. I show up with what's needed and the job gets done where your car sits.

Q: My 2004 Forester fob stopped working but the key still starts the car fine. Are those two separate problems?

Yes, and this trips people up on this generation Subaru pretty regularly. The key starting the car and the remote locking and unlocking the doors are handled by two different systems. The transponder in the key talks to the immobilizer. The fob talks to the body control module for the door locks and alarm. They're registered separately.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Forester. Can I program it myself?

Not on this one. There's no DIY button sequence or ignition cycling trick that registers a new remote to a 2004 Forester. Programming requires a scan tool that can communicate with the body control module directly. If you already bought the fob, that's fine -- bring it, and I can register it on-site. You're not out the money you spent on the remote itself, you just still need the programming step done with the right equipment.

2004 Subaru Forester Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

La Colonia, mid-morning. A guy texted me a pin from a parking lot off Saviers Road. He had his 2004 Forester sitting there, running fine the last time he drove it -- until the fob stopped responding to anything.

Lock, unlock, nothing. The key still turned the ignition, so the car wasn't dead, but he works odd hours and the remote lock was how he knew the car was secure when he walked away from it in the dark.

He'd already tried a new CR2025. Same result. He figured the fob was gone and wanted to know if he needed to go to the dealer.

I pulled up to him on Saviers, popped the fob apart right there on my tailgate. The board looked fine, contacts clean. The issue was the registration -- it had dropped out of memory, which can happen on these when the battery goes fully dead or the body control module loses power. The fob itself was still good.

Re-registered the remote to the module with the right equipment, walked every button, confirmed range from across the lot. The whole thing took maybe twenty-five minutes.

He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a dealer. He needed someone who knew that on this generation Subaru, a dead battery event can quietly erase the remote pairing without touching anything else.

How long does a 2004 Subaru Forester key replacement take?▼

Depends on where you're starting. If you have at least one working key and just need a spare remote registered, the programming side of the job runs roughly fifteen to twenty minutes once I'm connected to the vehicle. Add-a-key on this generation Subaru is a manageable job when there's already a working key in the system. All-keys-lost is a longer visit.
