A graphic novelist up in the Via Marina neighborhood in Oxnard called because nobody else could get to his car. His 2003 Forester was parked on a steep one-lane hillside street with no turnout. A tow truck already tried and couldn't make the turn. The dealer told him to get the car to them first. He couldn't, because he had no working key. That's where the conversation ended for them.
I parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up with my gear.
The 2003 Forester runs a fixed-code 4D62 transponder chip paired to the immobilizer ECU. His existing key was physically broken at the bow, blade snapped clean off inside the ignition weeks earlier, and he'd been using just the remote to lock and unlock while borrowing rides. I pulled the broken blade stub from the ignition cylinder, decoded the cuts from it, and used my VVDI2 to clone the 4D62 data onto a fresh chip. Cut a new DAT17 side-milled blade right there on the hill.
His NHVWB1U711 remote was still working for lock, unlock, panic, and trunk, so I swapped it into a new shell since the old rubber pad was cracked through to the board. Fresh CR2025, tested every button standing on that slope.
His car started on the first turn. He just stood there watching the dash like he didn't trust it yet. Never had to move the Forester an inch.
