2002 Subaru Forester Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A chiropractor in the Pleasant Valley area of Oxnard called me on a Wednesday. Patients booked every 30 minutes until 5pm. His 2002 Forester remote had quit responding. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing on any of the four buttons. He thought the car was dead.
It wasn't. The second-gen Forester (2003 was technically the SG, but the 2002 is the last SF body) uses a separate keyless remote, part number 88036-XA010, and a mechanical transponder key. The remote handles door locks and panic. The transponder chip in the key head handles starting. Two independent systems. His car started fine. He just couldn't lock and unlock from across the parking lot.
I drove to his office lot and got there between his 1:00 and 1:30 patients. Cracked open the NHVWB1U711 fob, found a corroded CR2025 that had leaked just enough to leave residue on the board contacts. Cleaned the board, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and reprogrammed the remote frequency using the manual door-lock pairing sequence these older Subarus support.
Tested all four buttons at range. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Everything came back. He walked out, saw the fob sitting on his hood, picked it up, and clicked it once like he was testing whether I was telling the truth.
Car never left the spot. He never missed a patient. The whole thing took less time than his average adjustment.
