2002 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the remote programming actually take once you're at my car?

For a 2002 Forester where you still have a working key, the remote programming itself is quick once we're connected and set up, usually well under thirty minutes from the time we arrive. The part that takes the most time is confirming every button works and verifying the range before we pack up.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a lot. The dealer process on an older Subaru almost always involves scheduling an appointment, waiting on parts if they don't have the fob in stock, and sitting through a shop queue. Some owners report being told it'll take several days. We carry blanks and the equipment to program them on the van. One trip to your location in Oxnard and the job is done.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2002 Forester. Will it work, or does it still need programming?

It needs programming. The fob you bought won't do anything out of the box. The remote has to be registered to your specific car through a programming sequence, and the 2002 Forester can only hold a limited number of remotes in memory. Here's the catch with aftermarket fobs: quality varies, and a badly made blank can look fine until it fails six months later. If you already have one, bring it when you call.

Q: My Forester fob only works when I'm right next to the car. Is it the battery or something worse?

Usually the battery. A weak CR2025 will cut the signal range down to almost nothing before it stops working entirely. Swap it first. If range is still short after a fresh battery with good contact, the issue could be the fob's internal components wearing out after 20-plus years, interference in whatever lot you're parked in, or in some cases the receiver on the car side getting flaky with age.

2002 Subaru Forester Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy at his office parking lot off Gonzales Road in Mandalay Beach called on a Thursday afternoon. He had patients back to back and his Forester remote had stopped responding the day before. He was driving in manually, unlocking by key, but he wanted the fob fixed before the weekend.

He'd already tried a new CR2025 from Walgreens. Battery was fine. The fob just wasn't talking to the car anymore.

I pulled up during his lunch break. The key and fob are separate on the 2002, so there was no ignition drama, just a remote that had lost its registration. I connected, cleared the stored remotes, and walked through the programming sequence with both fobs, his original and a spare he'd bought online months ago and never gotten around to pairing.

He walked back out after his next patient. Both fobs working, all four buttons on each, confirmed from across the lot.

He mentioned he'd called the dealer first. They told him to bring it in, couldn't give him a same-day window, and the estimate they floated was more than he wanted to spend just for a fob. He paid a fraction of that, never moved the car.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Subaru key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Subaru dealer service hours are typically weekdays with limited Saturday windows, and finding an open appointment for a key job on short notice is harder than it sounds. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening near Mandalay Beach, you're likely looking at a Monday wait at minimum, and that's assuming they have the right fob in stock. We work nights and weekends in Oxnard because that's exactly when these situations come up.
