1999 Toyota Avalon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 1999 Avalon?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right key for your car and give you a price before I leave. When I arrive, I cut the key blade to match your ignition and door locks, then connect to the OBD port with my programming equipment to register the transponder to your vehicle's immobilizer. After that I test the key in the ignition, check the door locks, and hand it to you.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, usually the registration. I pull the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb to verify the key specs before I cut anything. That's it. I keep it simple. Some dealers have required additional documentation or even corporate authorization before they'll process a key order, which adds time and frustration on top of an already inconvenient situation. I'm not doing any of that.

Q: I have a working key. Can I get a spare made for my 1999 Avalon before I ever lose one?

Yes, and this is actually the best time to do it. When you still have a working key, the job is clean. I can use your existing key to confirm the cut, and the programming process with a working key present is faster and more predictable than an all-keys-lost situation. Owners who wait until they've lost every key often end up in a harder job at a worse moment.

Q: My 1999 Avalon cranks but won't start. Could the key be the problem?

It could be. If the engine cranks but doesn't fire, and there's a security or key warning showing on the dash, the immobilizer is worth looking at. On these Avalons, a transponder that isn't recognized by the system will let the starter turn the engine over but cut fuel or ignition so it won't run. A worn or damaged key head can sometimes cause an inconsistent read, especially if the transponder inside has been cracked from drops or impact.

1999 Toyota Avalon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Nyeland Acres who had been sitting on this problem for about a week. Her 1999 Avalon wouldn't start, and her only key had a crack running through the head of it. She wasn't sure if the key itself was failing or if something else was wrong with the car. She'd been getting a ride to work and putting off dealing with it.

She'd already called the Toyota dealer. They told her to have it towed in, said the wait for a programming appointment was a few days out, and gave her a parts and labor quote that made her pause. She started looking for another option before she even hung up.

I drove out to her place. The Avalon was sitting in the driveway, not going anywhere. I pulled the VIN, confirmed the key specs, and got to work. Cut a new key blade to match her locks and ignition, then connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port and registered the transponder to the vehicle's immobilizer. The whole job happened in her driveway while she stood there watching.

She turned the key herself when I handed it to her. It started on the first try. She said she'd been dreading this being some big ordeal. It wasn't. One visit, everything included, for way less than the dealer route she'd almost committed to.

Toyota Avalon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1999 Toyota Avalon somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the car is, whether that's a driveway in Nyeland Acres, a parking lot, or your workplace in Oxnard. The dealer's process typically means towing the car in if you have no working key, then waiting for a programming appointment, which is often scheduled days out. I carry the key blank, the cutting machine, and the programming equipment in my van. Everything gets done on site, one visit.
