Down near Oxnard Skate Park, a 2021 Avalon owner had that modern problem: the car wouldn't see the key sitting right there on the dash.
She'd already done the battery swap. CR2032, positive side up, clicked in tight. Still got "Key Not Detected" every third try. The push button would flash amber instead of green, and she'd have to hold the fob against the button to get it to start. Classic symptom of a dying smart key, except the battery was brand new.
I scanned for codes first. Nothing stored. Checked the fob's board number: 271451-0351, which matches the HYQ14FBC-0351 housing. No corrosion, no cracks. But when I tested signal strength, it was weak at two feet when it should reach fifteen.
The issue was in the car, not the key. The Smart ECU antenna behind the push button was barely picking up signal. Quick reset of the Smart System through Techstream, clear the learned key data, re-register the fob. Signal went from two feet to full range.
The Avalon's smart system can get confused after multiple low-battery warnings. Sometimes it needs a clean slate. Twenty minutes in a skate park parking lot beats waiting three days at the dealer for the same reset.
