2018 Toyota Avalon Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was out in Ormond Beach when a woman flagged me down in the parking lot near the water. She hadn't called yet. She just saw the van and took a shot.
She'd been locked out for about forty minutes. Her fob had been acting up for a week, she said. Touch unlock was hit or miss, and that morning it just stopped responding entirely. She'd tried the door handle a dozen times. The Avalon was sitting there locked, fob in her hand, doing nothing.
I asked if she still had the mechanical key inside the fob. She looked at me like I'd asked something in a foreign language. We pulled the emergency blade out of the fob housing, got her into the car in about thirty seconds, and she let out a long breath.
From there I checked the battery first. The CR1632 inside was the original, five years in, and it tested low. Swapped it out, reseated the contacts, and the fob came back about eighty percent. Touch unlock on the driver handle was still inconsistent, which told me the fob itself wasn't the whole story.
I ran a check through the OBD port and found the immobilizer was still reading the fob cleanly every time. That ruled out a programming issue. The touch sensor on the driver handle was the weak point, not the key. I told her straight: the key is fine, the handle is where to focus next.
She'd been ready to call the dealer and wait two days for a new key. She didn't need one. The whole thing took about twenty-five minutes, parked right where she found me.
