Out near St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, a guy had just landed after a week-long trip and walked out to the cell phone lot to grab his 2013 Avalon. Nothing. Fob clicks, no response. Doors locked, and the emergency insert blade was zipped inside his bag in the trunk.
He called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest opening. It was Tuesday.

First thing, I got the door open so he could breathe and grab his bag. Then I popped the dead fob, swapped the CR1632, and the proximity unlock came back on the door handles right away. But the dash was still showing a fault. I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash, pulled up the immobilizer module, and found a stored communication error from the smart key ECU. His two fobs were still registered, just a stale fault from the battery dying while the system kept polling. Cleared the code, cycled the push-button start, ran every button on the fob plus both door handle sensors.
He drove home that afternoon. His car never left the spot he parked it in a week ago, and the whole thing took less time than his shuttle ride from the terminal. I left him a spare CR1632 for the glovebox.
