A guy near The Collection in Oxnard called me on a Saturday afternoon. His 2010 Avalon was parked inside a gated community guest lot, the fob had stopped working overnight, and the tow company he contacted told him they couldn't come through the gate without a resident to escort them in. He had no backup key and couldn't drive the car out to meet anyone at the street.

I followed a resident through the gate and walked over to the Avalon with my bag. The fob was completely dead, not even unlocking the doors. I pulled the emergency insert blade from the fob housing, unlocked the door the old-fashioned way, and got into the car to confirm what we were dealing with. The battery in the original fob was shot and one of the internal contacts had a slight bend that had been cutting the connection intermittently for a while. That's a common way these fail: not all at once, but gradually, until one morning it just doesn't work.
I built a replacement fob on site, programmed it to the vehicle through the diagnostic port with my equipment, cut and verified the insert blade, and walked him through checking every button and both door handles before I left. The car never needed a tow. No flatbed fees, no gate logistics, no waiting at a service counter.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number I won't repeat, plus the cost of getting the car there. He paid a fraction of that and didn't move the Avalon an inch.
