Out on the Collins Drive corridor in Moorpark, a guy had just gotten back from a week-long trip. Walked to his 2006 Avalon in the airport cell phone lot and nothing happened. No chirp, no door unlock, no response at all from the fob. Dead CR1632.
The problem was his emergency blade was inside his bag. His bag was in the trunk. No way in.
He called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest appointment. It was Tuesday. He found me online and asked if I could come out to the lot.
I got there in about 40 minutes. Picked the door open, popped the hood on the situation. Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash and pulled the immobilizer status. Both his registered keys showed valid in the system, no corruption on the TMS37126 chip side. The 93C56 EEPROM on the immo ECU board was reading clean. The whole issue was a dead CR1632 causing a proximity communication fault, which had thrown a stored code.
Swapped the battery, cleared the fault, then walked every function: both front door touch sensors, trunk release, panic, push-button start from inside and outside the car. All good.
He drove home that afternoon. His car never left the parking space he pulled into a week earlier. I left him a spare CR1632 for the glovebox because that is the kind of thing you forget to buy until it is too late again.
