A guy in Oxnard, down in the Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor neighborhood, called because his 2017 Avalon would not start and the tow company could not get past his gated complex without a resident escort. He could not escort them because the car was the only way out. Classic lockout loop.
I drove in behind another resident and walked to his car with my bag.
His original HYQ14FBA was physically damaged. The case had cracked near the emergency blade release and the board inside, the 281451-2110 Denso unit, had a corroded battery terminal. The fob would light up sometimes but the car's cabin antenna was not picking it up at the push-button start. He had been holding the fob right against the start button to get it going, which is the backup method Toyota describes in the owner's manual, and even that quit working.
I pulled a fresh HYQ14FBA from my stock, cut a new TOY48 emergency insert blade by decoding his driver door, and registered the fob through the OBD port using the proximity pairing procedure. The 8A chip handshake took about two minutes. Tested all four buttons, both front door handles for touch-to-lock and touch-to-unlock, the trunk release, and push-button start from the driver seat and passenger seat.
His car never moved. No tow. No dealer appointment three days out. Just a guy walking through a gate with a bag, fixing it on site for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him on the phone.
