I got a call from a guy parked at the Home Depot near South Bank in Oxnard. He was on his lunch break, standing next to his 2012 Avalon, and he had two problems: the car wouldn't start, and he'd already burned twenty minutes on hold with the dealer before hanging up.

The fob had a new battery, but when I opened the housing on my kit bag right there on the hood, the CR1632 was sitting slightly off-plane. The contact plate had a small bow to it, probably from being pried open the wrong way. I straightened it, reseated the battery correctly, and tested before doing anything else. Touch unlock on the driver door came back. Start button responded. That fixed half of it.

The other half was the second key, the one he'd bought online that had never been paired. That one needed the diagnostic port. I ran the registration procedure through the OBD connector under the dash, confirmed the new fob was enrolled, and walked all four buttons plus the door handles. Everything behaved.

He made it back to work on time. The dealer appointment he'd been dreading was scheduled for the following Thursday.
