I got a call from a guy parked at the Home Depot near South Bank in Oxnard. He was on his lunch break, standing next to his 2012 Avalon, and he had two problems: the car wouldn't start, and he'd already burned twenty minutes on hold with the dealer before hanging up.

I ran the registration procedure through the OBD connector under the dash, confirmed the new fob was enrolled, and walked all four buttons plus the door handles. Everything behaved.
He made it back to work on time. The dealer appointment he'd been dreading was scheduled for the following Thursday.
