A renter at an apartment complex near Campus Canyon Park in Moorpark called me about his 2002 Toyota Avalon. He had one working transponder key and wanted a spare made before it disappeared or snapped off in his pocket. He had already called the dealer and heard a number that made him start Googling mobile locksmiths.
I pulled up to his building and checked the VIN on the dash. US-built, 1-prefix, standard immobilizer config with the 4C chip. Good. I grabbed my TOY43 Lishi and decoded his driver door lock right there in the parking spot. The Lishi reads the wafer positions inside the lock cylinder so I can cut an exact blade without needing his original as a template.
Cut the TOY43 blank, seated the 4C glass transponder in the key head, and connected to the OBD-II port under the dash. On these older Avalons the registration procedure is pretty quick because the system accepts the fixed 4C code without a timed countdown. Cycled the ignition, confirmed the immobilizer light on the dash went steady then off, which means the new key is recognized.
Tested start, tested the door, handed it to him. He turned it over in his hand like he expected it to look different from his original. It doesn't. Same key, same function, done in his parking spot for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
